Black Cardamom

Black Cardamom pods are used as a spice, in a similar manner to the green cardamom pods, but with a different flavor. The pods have tough, dried, wrinkly skin, are roughly one inch in length and house small, sticky, dark-colored seeds. Black cardamom has a pungent aroma with a citrus and eucalyptus flavor. Unlike green cardamom, this spice is rarely used in sweet dishes. Black cardamom’s flavor profile is difficult to replicate. Its smoky flavor and aroma derive from traditional methods of drying over open flames.

Amomum subulatum, also known as Nepal cardamom is native to the Eastern Himalayas and is cultivated at high altitudes in a region spanning from Eastern Nepal to Yunnan Province in China. 

While both varieties of cardamom are popular in various cuisines, it is the black cardamom that finds usage in the health and beauty industry as well! The oil extracted from the black cardamoms is effective in aromatherapy and curing various other ailments as well!
